KERN COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT – PRESS RELEASE

Operations in Kern River Branch Court to Begin August 19, 2015.
The Superior Court, County of Kern has announced that restoration of limited court services will begin in the Kern River Branch Court on August 19, 2015. Services will include the hearing of filings for limited civil and small claims matters for local residents. Local law enforcement and other government agencies will also be filing traffic and other infractions to be heard at the local branch. The Court will open on Wednesdays at 8:30 AM and hearings will begin generally at 9:00 AM.

“We are very happy that we can once again begin to provide services to the Lake Isabella community,” said Judge Kenneth Pritchard, Supervising Judge for the Eastern District. “Getting this court back in operation is a team effort and my court staff and the volunteer pro tem judges should be congratulated for their efforts to get this project going so quickly.”

The Kern River Branch Court is located in Lake Isabella at 7046 Lake Isabella Blvd. It was closed for operations two years ago due to significant budget cuts. Residents should still file their court documents at the Ridgecrest Branch located at 132 East Coso Street. Payments can be made by telephone or online. “It took us more time than anticipated to get some of the technical connections with the local phone provider so that our computers could communicate with the primary servers,” said Terry McNally, Court Executive Officer for the Superior Court. “However we think we have everything we need in place to restore services to the local community.”

All Misdemeanor cases will continue to be heard at the Ridgecrest Branch Court facility and Felony cases are heard in the Superior Court, Metro Division, 1415 Truxtun Ave, Bakersfield Ca. For Questions concerning cases at the Kern River Branch Court please call (760) 384-5900.

New Standard Mileage Rates for 2015

Beginning on January 1, 2015, the Internal Revenue Service has increase the standard mileage rates for the use of a car, van, pickup or panel truck.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today issued the 2015 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. The new rates are:

• 57.5 cents per mile for business miles driven, up from 56 cents in 2014
• 23 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes, down half a cent from 2014
• 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations

The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile, including depreciation, insurance, repairs, tires, maintenance, gas and oil. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs, such as gas and oil. The charitable rate is set by law.

Taxpayers always have the option of claiming deductions based on the actual costs of using a vehicle rather than the standard mileage rates.

A taxpayer may not use the business standard mileage rate for a vehicle after claiming accelerated depreciation, including the Section 179 expense deduction, on that vehicle. Likewise, the standard rate is not available to fleet owners (more than four vehicles used simultaneously). Details on these and other special rules are in Revenue Procedure 2010-51, the instructions to Form 1040 and various online IRS publications including Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax.

Besides the standard mileage rates, Notice 2014-79, posted today on IRS.gov, also includes the basis reduction amounts for those choosing the business standard mileage rate, as well as the maximum standard automobile cost that may be used in computing an allowance under a fixed and variable rate plan.

San Francisco Court Clerks STRIKE

San Francisco Superior Court clerks are walking the picket lines Tuesday, October 14, 2014, saying they are on strike because court officials have refused to offer them a raise. Court operations are expected to be affected, but to what extent is not immediately clear. Union officials said they expected the clerks’ offices to be closed and court hearings to be cancelled. Picket lines were set up at 6:30 a.m. at three court locations in the city, said Steve Stallone, a spokesman for Service Employees International Union Local 1021. Last month, more than 90 percent of clerks who cast ballots voted to authorize the strike.  The daylong strike at the Hall of Justice, the Civic Center Courthouse and the Youth Guidance Center comes a day after state court offices were closed for Columbus Day.

San Diego Superior Court Issues Scam Warning

The San Diego Superior Court has seen an increase in the number of people receiving calls from scammers pretending to be members of the court or law enforcement. The Court has received numerous reports of scammers phoning members of the public saying there is an arrest warrant out for a missed court date or missed jury duty.

The fake officials are instructing people to get convenience store cash cards to pay off the warrants.

“The Court does not phone someone to remedy a court issue or fine. The Court sends written notice on official stationery. Court staff or law enforcement will not call someone asking for money. In addition, no one should be insisting you pay a fine in cash,” says Michael Roddy, Executive Officer of the San Diego Superior Court. Those who receive such a phone call should simply hang up and, if the scammer persists, call their local law enforcement agency.
